Yttriastabiliserad is a term used to describe materials that have been enhanced with yttrium oxide to improve their properties. This is particularly common in ceramics, where yttrium oxide is added to stabilize the crystal structure of other oxides. The most well-known example is yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Zirconia, in its pure form, undergoes phase transformations upon heating and cooling, which can lead to cracking. By adding yttrium oxide, these phase transformations are suppressed, making the zirconia much more durable and resistant to thermal shock.

YSZ is widely used in various high-temperature applications due to its excellent mechanical strength, toughness, and chemical inertness. It finds applications as thermal barrier coatings in gas turbines and jet engines, protecting metal components from extreme heat. It is also used in dental crowns and bridges, crucibles for melting metals, and as an electrolyte in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The concentration of yttria in YSZ can vary, with common compositions including 8% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ), which is fully stabilized at room temperature. The specific properties can be tailored by adjusting the yttria content.
