YSR is an acronym most commonly associated with Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy (1949–2009), an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2004 until his death in 2009. A member of the Indian National Congress, he led the state government after a decisive 2004 election victory and pursued a range of welfare-oriented policies aimed at rural and poor communities.

During his tenure, the government launched notable welfare initiatives, including large-scale social schemes and rural development programs designed to expand access to healthcare and education. His leadership shaped Andhra Pradesh politics for several years and earned him a strong support base in many rural areas.

After YSR’s death in a helicopter crash in September 2009, his legacy continued to influence regional politics. In 2011, his son, Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, founded the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in his memory, positioning it as a regional party focused on welfare and development issues in Andhra Pradesh. The party adopted the initials YSR to honor the late chief minister and quickly became a major political force in the state.

The YSRCP achieved electoral success in subsequent years, notably winning a majority in the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, with Jaganmohan Reddy serving as Chief Minister. In broader political discourse, YSR remains a symbol used to refer to the former chief minister, his policy legacy, and the YSR Congress Party.
