ysak

Ysak is a rural locality situated in the Tartar District of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The settlement lies in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, approximately 25 kilometres southeast of the district centre of Tartar. The area is characterised by a temperate continental climate, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters, and the terrain is largely forested with agricultural terraces interspersed among rolling hills.

The village’s origins trace back to the early 19th century when it was established by settlers from nearby valleys seeking arable land. Historical records from the 1860s mention Ysak as a small agricultural community, predominantly involved in grain cultivation and orcharding. During the Soviet period, the locality was integrated into the Tartar Agricultural Cooperative, which expanded local irrigation infrastructure and introduced collective farming practices.

Today Ysak has an estimated population of around 1,200 residents, according to the most recent census conducted in 2015. The local economy remains largely agrarian, with residents engaged in farming, livestock rearing, and artisanal cottage crafts such as weaving and woodwork. In recent years, there has been a modest development of eco‑tourism, with visitors attracted by the natural scenery and traditional cultural experiences.

Key community facilities include a primary school, a health clinic, and a community centre that hosts local events and cultural celebrations. Ysak also hosts the annual Harvest Festival each autumn, which features folk music, dance performances, and the display of locally produced crafts and agricultural produce. The village is connected by a regional road network that links it to Tartar and to larger national routes, facilitating the transport of goods and access to urban amenities for residents.
