Yrkesexamen is a formal qualification awarded in Sweden upon completion of a vocational upper secondary program (yrkesprogram) in the gymnasium. It certifies that the holder has the practical skills and knowledge required to perform a trade and work in the chosen field. The programs combine classroom instruction with work-based learning, often including a work placement (APL) and a final assessment conducted in collaboration with industry partners. To obtain the yrkesexamen, students complete all program requirements and pass the final evaluation.

The content and structure of the yrkesexamen reflect the specific trade and include relevant theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on competence. Training emphasizes safety, technical procedures, quality and production processes, and problem-solving in real work situations. Practical tasks and projects, along with demonstrations of workplace readiness, are common elements of the final assessment.

Recognition and outcomes. The yrkesexamen is a recognized credential for entering the labor market in Sweden and is commonly required or highly valued by employers in trades such as construction, electrical work, automotive repair, hospitality, health and social care, and IT support. In many programs, completion also provides eligibility for higher education through various routes; some tracks offer general or specialized university eligibility (högskolebehörighet or särskild behörighet) in addition to the vocational credential. The qualification can also serve as a foundation for continued learning and career advancement within the chosen field.
