Yksilömäärien is a Finnish term that refers to counts or quantities of individual organisms in a defined population or area. In ecology and population biology the concept is central to measuring abundance, assessing population trends and informing management or conservation decisions. It can denote absolute numbers, densities (individuals per unit area or volume) or indices derived from observations.

Measurement of yksilömäärien uses methods such as full censuses, transect counts, quadrat sampling, mark–recapture, distance sampling, camera trapping, acoustic monitoring and environmental DNA. Choice of method depends on species detectability, habitat, spatial scale and resources. Statistical techniques correct for imperfect detection and provide estimates with uncertainty; common approaches include capture–recapture models, distance-sampling models and hierarchical abundance models.

Applications include monitoring endangered species, setting harvest quotas, studying community composition, and modelling population dynamics.
