Yksikköruiskut, also known as unit injectors, are a type of fuel injection system commonly used in diesel engines. They combine the injector and the injection pump into a single unit for each cylinder. This integrated design eliminates the need for high-pressure fuel lines running from a central pump to each injector, which can reduce system complexity and potential leaks.

In a unit injector system, the camshaft lobe operates a plunger within the unit, pressurizing the fuel. The pressure is generated directly at the injector nozzle, allowing for very precise control over the injection timing and quantity. This precise control contributes to improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The electronic control unit (ECU) of the engine manages the timing and duration of the injection by actuating a solenoid valve within the unit injector.

Unit injector systems offer several advantages, including high injection pressures, precise fuel metering, and rapid response times. They are known for their durability and robustness, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications. However, they can also be more expensive to manufacture and repair compared to some other fuel injection systems. The development of common rail systems has, in some applications, superseded unit injectors, but they remain a significant technology in diesel engine design.
