YKomponente refers to the y-component of a vector in Cartesian coordinates. It denotes the projection of the vector onto the y-axis and corresponds to the second coordinate in the vector’s representation. In two dimensions, a vector v = (v_x, v_y) has YKomponente equal to v_y. In three dimensions, for v = (v_x, v_y, v_z), the YKomponente is v_y.

Common notation includes v_y or y. The y-component can be obtained by the dot product with the unit vector along the y-axis, e_y = (0, 1, 0) in 3D, so v_y = v · e_y. The magnitude of the y-component is at most the magnitude of the vector: |v_y| ≤ |v|, with equality when the vector lies on the y-axis. It also equals |v| cos(phi), where phi is the angle between v and the y-axis. In planar coordinates with polar form v = (r, θ) (θ measured from the x-axis), the YKomponente is y = r sin θ.

Beyond pure geometry, the concept is used in physics and engineering to decompose vectors into vertical or lateral parts, for example for velocity, force, or acceleration components along the y direction. It also appears in computer graphics for coordinate transformations and in data analysis when expressing quantities as sums of axis-aligned components.

In color science, the term Y-Komponente is sometimes used to refer to the luminance component Y in color spaces such as YUV or YCbCr, which encodes perceived brightness rather than a spatial axis.
