Yhteyssanat, also known as conjunctions in English, are words that connect words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. They serve to establish relationships between different parts of a sentence, making the text flow logically and coherently. Finnish grammar categorizes yhteyssanat into several types based on the function they perform.

Coordinating conjunctions, such as 'ja' (and), 'mutta' (but), and 'tai' (or), connect elements that are of equal grammatical rank. For instance, 'Aurinko paistaa ja linnut laulavat' (The sun is shining and the birds are singing) uses 'ja' to link two independent clauses. 'Mutta' introduces a contrast, as seen in 'Halusin mennä ulos, mutta alkoi sataa' (I wanted to go out, but it started to rain). 'Tai' presents an alternative, for example, 'Voit lukea kirjan tai katsoa elokuvan' (You can read a book or watch a movie).

Subordinating conjunctions, like 'että' (that), 'jos' (if), and 'kun' (when), introduce dependent clauses that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. These conjunctions indicate a relationship of dependence, often showing cause, condition, or time. An example is 'Uskon, että hän tulee' (I believe that he will come), where 'että' introduces the subordinate clause. 'Jos sataa, jäämme kotiin' (If it rains, we will stay home) uses 'jos' to establish a condition.

Other types of yhteyssanat include correlative conjunctions that appear in pairs, such as 'joko...tai' (either...or), and adverbial conjunctions that connect clauses and also provide adverbial meaning, like 'siksi' (therefore) or 'kuitenkin' (however). Mastering the use of yhteyssanat is crucial for constructing complex and meaningful sentences in Finnish.
