Unlike sequential logic, there is no memory element or feedback loop involved in combinational circuits. The fundamental building blocks of combinational logic are logic gates, such as AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, and XOR gates. These gates perform basic Boolean operations on binary inputs (0s and 1s) to produce a binary output. Complex combinational circuits are constructed by interconnecting these basic gates in various configurations. Examples of common combinational logic circuits include adders, subtractors, multiplexers, demultiplexers, encoders, and decoders. These circuits are essential for performing arithmetic operations, data selection, and data conversion within digital systems.

The design process for combinational logic typically involves defining the desired input-output relationship, often represented by a truth table. From the truth table, Boolean expressions are derived, which are then simplified using Boolean algebra or Karnaugh maps. Finally, these simplified expressions are implemented using logic gates. The speed of operation in combinational circuits is primarily determined by the propagation delay through the logic gates.
