Yellowhorn, scientifically known as Xanthoceras sorbifolium, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to northern China. It is the sole species in the genus Xanthoceras, belonging to the soapberry family (Sapindaceae). This plant is notable for its attractive ornamental qualities and its edible seeds.

The shrub typically grows to a height of 2 to 5 meters. Its leaves are pinnately compound, resembling those of the mountain ash (Sorbus), which gives rise to the specific epithet "sorbifolium." In spring, usually in May or June, yellowhorn produces abundant clusters of showy flowers. These flowers are typically white with five petals, each featuring a distinct yellow or orange blotch at the base. The flowers have a pleasant fragrance and are attractive to pollinators.

Following the blooms, yellowhorn develops a fruit, a capsule that splits open to reveal several glossy black seeds. These seeds are often compared to small buckeyes and are edible, with a taste and texture similar to chestnuts. They can be eaten raw or roasted and are a traditional food source in some regions of China. The plant is also cultivated for its ornamental value in gardens and parks, particularly for its profuse spring flowering. It is relatively hardy and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained soil and full sun.
