Xenoceramics is a term used in materials science to describe ceramic materials that incorporate foreign or extraterrestrial components. The name combines xen- meaning "foreign" with ceramics. In practice, xenoceramics may refer to ceramics synthesized from meteorite powders or lunar/martian analog materials, or to composites that embed exotic mineral phases into a ceramic matrix. The concept sits at the intersection of ceramic engineering, meteoritics, and planetary geology and is not yet standardized across disciplines.

Synthesis and processing typically begin with careful preparation of the foreign material, followed by mechanical milling to achieve a fine powder. Consolidation often uses sintering, hot pressing, spark plasma sintering, or microwave-assisted methods. Processing goals include achieving a uniform microstructure, controlling phase assemblages, and limiting contamination from terrestrial equipment. Replicating extraterrestrial mineral assemblages can be challenging due to differences in pressure, temperature, and chemical environment compared with Earth laboratories.

Properties of xenoceramics depend heavily on the base ceramic and the foreign phases but can include high hardness, thermal stability, and refractoriness. Thermal conductivity and fracture toughness are variable and often a focus of research. Potential applications are mainly in niche or exploratory contexts, such as protective coatings for space environments, refractory components for extreme heat, or inert crucibles for handling reactive materials. In research settings, xenoceramics serve as models for mineral physics and the behavior of extraterrestrial materials under ceramic processing.

Because the term xenoceramics is not widely standardized, different groups may use it differently: some define it as fully extraterrestrial-derived ceramics, others as ceramics containing foreign mineral inclusions. Further consensus would help clarify definitions, methods, and comparisons across studies.
