The x86-64 architecture, also known as AMD64 or Intel 64, is a 64-bit extension of the x86 instruction set architecture. It was originally developed by AMD and later adopted by Intel. This architecture allows processors to handle data in 64-bit chunks, significantly increasing the amount of addressable memory and the potential for larger register sizes compared to its 32-bit predecessor, x86.

This is achieved through a larger virtual address space. x86-64 maintains backward compatibility with 32-bit x86 software, meaning that existing 32-bit applications can run on 64-bit processors without modification, typically within a compatibility mode.
