Współistnienie (Polish for coexistence) refers to the long-term persistence of two or more species within the same ecological community. It involves interactions among species and shared use of resources in ways that prevent one species from driving the others to extinction, allowing stable populations to endure over time.

In ecology, coexistence arises when differences among species reduce direct competition or when stabilizing feedbacks balance fitness differences. Mechanisms include niche differentiation or resource partitioning (different microhabitats, diets, or activity times); spatial or temporal separation; and life-history trade-offs. Positive interactions such as mutualism or facilitation can also support coexistence. Modern coexistence theory distinguishes stabilizing mechanisms, which promote coexistence by reducing interspecific competition, from equalizing mechanisms, which minimize average fitness differences. Stochastic effects, immigration, habitat heterogeneity, and metapopulation dynamics further influence coexistence, as can interactions with predators, pathogens, and mutualists that modify competitive outcomes.

Examples of coexistence occur across ecosystems. In plant communities, grasses and forbs may coexist by using different soil depths or light niches. In freshwater systems, competing zooplankton species can persist when predator pressures or resource differences create complementary niches. Microbial communities often display coexistence through spatial structure and cross-feeding networks that stabilize diverse assemblages.
