Wistem is a term used in speculative technology and some research discussions to describe a class of modular, stem-like nodes designed for distributed sensing and computation. The term combines elements of wireless communication, stem-like form factors, and systemic networking, and is not widely standardized across disciplines.

Concept and form: In proposed designs, a wistem is a small, biocompatible module that can be attached to living plant stems or to synthetic supports. Each unit typically contains a microcontroller, a low-power radio transceiver, a sensor suite, and an energy-harvesting or storage subsystem. Wistems are intended to operate as part of a mesh or daisy-chained network, routing data between neighboring units and performing local data processing to reduce traffic.

Applications and research: The concept is explored in the context of environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, plant-device interfaces, and biohybrid robotics. Potential advantages include high-resolution spatial data, resilience through redundancy, and the ability to deploy sensing along natural growth pathways without heavy external infrastructure.
