Windtwisted refers to a phenomenon observed in certain trees, particularly those in exposed coastal or high-altitude environments. It describes the distinctive spiraling growth pattern of their trunks and branches, often appearing as if they have been twisted by a powerful, constant force. This growth anomaly is not due to an actual twisting of the wood but rather a directional and asymmetrical growth response to prevailing winds.

The mechanism behind windtwisting is thought to involve differential growth rates. On the side of the tree facing the prevailing wind, cells may grow at a slower rate or be subjected to stress that influences their elongation. Conversely, cells on the leeward side may experience less stress or even enhanced growth, leading to a gradual curvature and, over time, a spiraling appearance. This adaptation is believed to enhance the tree's stability, allowing it to better withstand strong winds and reduce the risk of breakage.

While the term "windtwisted" is descriptive, it is not a formal botanical classification. The phenomenon is a visual characteristic resulting from environmental pressures. Different tree species can exhibit varying degrees of windtwisting, and the intensity of the prevailing winds is a primary factor in the severity of the spiral. It is a common sight in areas known for consistent, strong breezes, such as the West Coast of North America, parts of New Zealand, and exposed mountain ranges. The resulting wood from windtwisted trees can sometimes have unique grain patterns, which may be of interest to woodworkers.
