Windterracing is a landscape engineering approach that integrates wind flow management with hillside terrace design to reduce wind erosion, conserve soil moisture, and stabilize steeper slopes. It combines terraced step structures with wind-aware features to influence near-surface wind speeds, sediment transport, and microclimates.

The concept builds on traditional terrace farming and windbreak strategies. In windterracing, terraces are positioned and shaped to alter airflow patterns, and may incorporate permeable walls or staggered steps to trap airborne dust and promote deposition.

Design elements include terrace orientation relative to prevailing winds, step height and width, materials for retaining walls, and the use of vegetation or artificial windbreaks to modify shear stress. Drainage, soil stabilization, and maintenance are essential.

Potential applications include agricultural production on sloped land, rehabilitation of degraded landscapes, and dust control in arid regions. By reducing wind speed at ground level, windterracing can lower erosion rates and improve microclimates, enabling crop establishment and water-use efficiency.

Research status is nascent; case studies are limited and outcomes depend on local wind regimes, soil properties, and maintenance. As a concept, windterracing remains under evaluation for environmental impact, cost, and long-term viability.
