In architecture and urban design, windprotected spaces are created to improve pedestrian comfort, reduce noise, and lower energy costs. Techniques include orienting buildings to block prevailing winds, creating courtyards, using walls, fences, hedges, and windbreaks, and shaping terrain with berms or terraces to slow wind.

In agriculture and horticulture, wind protection reduces plant damage, lowers evapotranspiration, and stabilizes microclimates. Common methods are rows of trees or shrubs as windbreaks, living fences, and sheltered planting beds or greenhouses with restricted ventilation.
