Shadier spots can host ferns, impatiens, coleus, or begonias. Trailing varieties are popular to spill over the edges, creating a lush effect. Seasonal rotation helps maintain color and vigor.

Maintenance and safety considerations include inspecting fixtures for corrosion or rot, resealing or repainting as needed, and winter protection in cold climates. For upper stories, wind can be a factor, so secure mounting and proper weight distribution are important. Windowboxes offer a versatile, reversible way to add greenery to small living spaces.
