wikang

Wikang is a constructed language created for linguistic experimentation and for use as a neutral demonstration language in studies of syntax, morphology, and cross-cultural communication. The name nods to the Filipino term wika, meaning language, but Wikang is a distinct system designed for analysis and learning rather than natural speech communities. The project is community-driven, with contributors sharing grammar notes, dictionaries, and example texts.

Phonology and writing: Wikang has about 25 phonemes, including five vowels and a compact set of consonants such as p, t, k, b, d, g, m, n, s, l, r, h, w, j. Syllables are typically CV or CVC, with stress commonly on the penultimate syllable. The writing system uses a Latin alphabet with phonemic spelling; diacritics may indicate vowel quality or stress, and hyphens link compound forms.

Grammar: The language is analytic and uses particles to mark tense, aspect, and mood. The default word order is subject–verb–object. Noun phrases include demonstratives and numerals before the noun, while articles are optional. Pronouns distinguish number and inclusive/exclusive references in community discussions, but the core system remains gender neutral.

Lexicon and development: The vocabulary blends roots from regional languages with invented terms to cover core concepts. Common word-building uses affixes such as -an, -in, and -al to derive verbs, nouns, and adjectives. The language favors regularity to ease learning and comparison.

Usage and study: Wikang exists mainly in online communities, learning resources, and academic demonstrations rather than as a nationwide means of communication. It serves as a case study in language design and documentation, with example texts, dictionaries, and teaching materials maintained by volunteers.
