Wigmakers are artisans who craft and repair wigs and hairpieces for a range of uses, including theatre, film, fashion, and medical needs. They may work as independent specialists, in salons, or as part of a wardrobe or costume department. The aim is to produce natural-looking head hair that fits securely, moves convincingly, and remains comfortable under wear.

Wigs are made from human hair, animal hair, or synthetic fibers. Construction can be machine-made or hand-tied. Hand-tied, or ventilated, wigs involve knotting individual hairs onto a mesh cap, yielding a natural scalp appearance and greater movement. Cap styles include basic caps, lace fronts, and monofilament tops, each affecting fit, ventilation, and realism.

The process includes measuring and shaping a cap to the wearer’s head, color matching, and securing the wig with straps or elastic. Wigmakers also cut, style, and maintain wigs, replenish lost hairs, and repair damages. In medical contexts, wigs may be designed as cranial prostheses, prioritising breathability and gentle, non-irritating materials.

Historically, wigmaking has roots in early modern Europe and earlier, with guilds and standardized techniques evolving into contemporary industry practices. Today, the craft blends traditional handwork with modern materials and licensing standards, reflecting its continued use in performance arts and personal hair restoration.
