The most frequently intended species is Salix alba, known as white willow, but the term can also encompass other willow varieties like Salix viminalis (common osier) or Salix purpurea (purple osier).

These willows are typically fast-growing shrubs or small trees found in moist environments, often along riverbanks, in wetlands, or in damp meadows.
