A wheelstand is a maneuver in which a vehicle, typically a car or motorcycle, balances on its rear wheels, with the front wheels lifted off the ground. This is usually achieved by applying a sudden surge of power, often in combination with a clutch drop or specific suspension geometry. Wheelstands are a popular stunt in motorsports, particularly drag racing and motorcycle racing, where they can be a deliberate demonstration of a vehicle's power and a driver's skill.

The physics behind a wheelstand involve the transfer of weight and the torque applied to the drive wheels. When a powerful engine accelerates rapidly, it creates a torque that tries to rotate the crankshaft. This rotation, through the drivetrain, is transmitted to the rear wheels. The resulting force attempts to turn the wheels, and by Newton's third law, the wheels push down on the ground. This action, combined with the vehicle's inertia and often a forward lean, can lift the front end. The height and duration of a wheelstand depend on factors such as engine power, weight distribution, wheelbase, and tire traction.

In some cases, wheelstands can be unintentional, occurring due to excessive acceleration or unexpected changes in road conditions. However, when performed intentionally, they require significant skill and control to maintain balance and steer the vehicle while on two wheels.
