The term highlights a focus on sample-level data, where the signal is treated as a sequence of amplitude values over time rather than as a set of higher-level features like spectra or cepstral coefficients.

In audio synthesis, waveform-based techniques generate sound by producing sample values directly, either autoregressively or through parallel generation. This approach contrasts with methods that first compute a spectral representation and then reconstruct audio. Notable examples include neural vocoders that produce raw audio waveforms from linguistic or latent inputs, such as WaveNet and related models. These methods aim to capture fine temporal details and naturalness by modeling the waveform itself.

In speech processing, waveform-based methods seek high-fidelity speech generation and natural prosody by modeling the time-domain signal. They can offer advantages in preserving phase information and reducing artifacts associated with waveform reconstruction from spectra, though they often require substantial computational resources.

Compared with spectral- or feature-based approaches, waveform-based techniques emphasize direct manipulation of the signal in the time domain. Strengths include potential gains in fidelity and end-to-end learnability; limitations frequently involve higher computational costs, data requirements, and training complexity.
