Watersolvent is a term that generally refers to any substance that can dissolve in water. This property is primarily determined by the polarity of the solute and the solvent. Water is a highly polar molecule due to the uneven distribution of electrons, creating a partial negative charge on the oxygen atom and partial positive charges on the hydrogen atoms. This polarity allows water to effectively interact with and surround other polar molecules, a process known as solvation.

For a substance to be considered watersolvent, it must be able to form favorable interactions with water molecules. These interactions can include hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole interactions, or ion-dipole interactions. For example, ionic compounds like sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolve in water because the positive sodium ions (Na+) are attracted to the negative oxygen end of water molecules, and the negative chloride ions (Cl-) are attracted to the positive hydrogen ends. Similarly, polar covalent molecules like ethanol (CH3CH2OH) readily dissolve due to their ability to form hydrogen bonds with water.

Conversely, nonpolar substances, such as oils and fats, do not dissolve well in water. This is because their molecules have a relatively even distribution of charge and cannot form strong attractive forces with polar water molecules. Instead, nonpolar molecules tend to aggregate together, minimizing their contact with water, a phenomenon known as the hydrophobic effect. The degree to which a substance dissolves in water is quantified by its solubility, often expressed in grams of solute per 100 grams of water at a specific temperature.
