Waterproofing is the process of making a surface or structure resistant to water intrusion. In construction, waterproofing aims to prevent water entry into foundations, basements, roofs, walls, balconies, tunnels and other critical areas, while allowing vapor diffusion where appropriate. It is distinct from damp-proofing, which reduces minor moisture transfer but not hydrostatic water pressure.

Common approaches include sheet membranes such as bituminous, PVC, TPO, and EPDM; liquid-applied membranes based on polyurethane, acrylic, or silicone chemistries; cementitious waterproofing coatings and slurries; and penetrating crystalline or cementitious treatments that block capillary pathways. Installation typically involves surface preparation, crack and joint treatment, detailing around penetrations, and protection from mechanical damage.

Substrates commonly treated include concrete, masonry, and cementitious blocks, with specialty systems used for metal or wood in specific applications. Systems are selected based on expected water exposure, pressure, climate, and compatibility with finishes and drainage details.

Applications range from basements and foundations exposed to soil moisture to roofs, terraces, bathrooms, swimming pools and water storage tanks. In many projects, waterproofing is integrated with drainage and insulation to manage water flow and thermal performance.

Performance depends on resisting hydrostatic pressure, weathering, and chemical exposure, as well as the durability of seals, joints, and flashings. Maintenance involves regular inspection of joints, edges, and penetrations, with timely repair or reapplication as needed. Service life varies by material, typically from several to many years.

Standards and testing vary by jurisdiction. Common practices include adhesion and continuity tests, simulated water exposure, and field inspections of installation quality.
