Water elves, also known as sea elves or aquatic elves, are a fictional humanoid race commonly found in fantasy settings, particularly in role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. They are typically depicted as a subrace of elves who have adapted to life in aquatic environments, such as oceans, seas, and large lakes.

Physically, water elves often share the slender build and pointed ears characteristic of their surface-dwelling kin. However, they usually possess adaptations for underwater survival. These may include webbed hands and feet, gills for breathing underwater, and skin tones that range from blues and greens to pearly whites, often with iridescent scales. Their hair colors can vary but are frequently depicted as shades of green, blue, or silver.

Water elves are generally portrayed as graceful and agile swimmers, at home in the depths. Their societies are often found in coral cities, submerged ruins, or hidden underwater grottos. Their culture tends to be insular, with a deep connection to the ocean and its creatures. They are often skilled in underwater combat, navigation, and the use of tridents or other aquatic weaponry. Magic, particularly related to water and illusion, is also a common trait attributed to them.

Their relationship with surface dwellers can vary depending on the specific fictional setting, ranging from cautious neutrality to outright hostility, or sometimes even alliance against common threats. They are often depicted as protectors of the seas, wary of the pollution and exploitation caused by land-based races.
