Waterbuis is a pipe or tube used to transport water in plumbing systems, irrigation networks, and industrial installations. The term is Dutch for a water pipe and is used to refer to conduits that carry potable or non-potable water in infrastructure.

Historically, pipes were made of clay, lead, or wood. Modern waterbuis are typically manufactured from materials such as PVC or CPVC, copper, PEX, ductile iron, or high-density polyethylene (HDPE), chosen for durability, safety, and compatibility with drinking water.

In residential settings, waterbuis carry potable water from the distribution network to taps and appliances. In municipal and industrial settings they can form large-diameter mains and service lines. Pipe materials and jointing methods vary by code, pressure requirements, and climate.

Common jointing methods include solvent cement bonding for PVC/CPVC, soldering or brazing for copper, crimp or expansion fittings for PEX, and mechanical couplings for ductile iron or HDPE. Proper installation requires correct burial depth, bedding, backfill, and pressure testing.

Maintenance focuses on preventing leaks and corrosion, controlling mineral buildup, and ensuring water quality. Components used for drinking water are subject to standards and certifications, such as those governing safe materials and contaminant levels. Lifespan depends on material and conditions but many pipes last decades with proper care.
