Waterbreathing refers to the biological ability of an organism to obtain sufficient oxygen from water to sustain metabolism. In nature, waterbreathing is achieved primarily by specialized respiratory organs or tissues that extract dissolved oxygen from water, rather than extracting air from the atmosphere. The term covers a range of strategies used by aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms, from fish to amphibians and some invertebrates.

Gills are the most common water-breathing organs in aquatic animals. They provide a large surface area for gas exchange and employ countercurrent exchange to maximize oxygen uptake: blood flows through the gill filaments in the opposite direction to water passing over them. Gills can be external or internal and are optimized for acquiring oxygen at low concentrations. Some species also respire through their skin or specialized structures, such as papillae or gill slits.

Some amphibians and lungfish are dual breathers: they primarily use lungs to obtain oxygen from air, but can supplement with gills or cutaneous respiration underwater. Other organisms rely on periodic air exposure or enter a low metabolic state to survive in hypoxic water. Many aquatic invertebrates use gill-like structures or diffusion through moist surfaces to acquire oxygen.

In humans, true waterbreathing is not possible without devices. Humans require atmospheric oxygen and must reach the surface to breathe air. Technologies such as scuba equipment enable underwater respiration by carrying breathable gas, while research into artificial gills aims to extract oxygen from water to power devices, though practical, portable systems are not yet commonplace.

Ecologically, waterbreathing strategies influence habitat use and survival in environments with variable oxygen, such as stagnant ponds or cold water. Evolution has produced a spectrum of adaptations from efficient gills to air-breathing lifestyles, shaping the distribution of aquatic organisms.
