A washtub is a large, sturdy container, typically made of metal or plastic, used for washing clothes by hand. Historically, washtubs were essential household items before the widespread adoption of washing machines. They were often made of wood or galvanized metal and were placed in kitchens, washhouses, or outdoors.

The process of washing clothes in a washtub involved several steps. Clothes were placed in the tub and covered with hot water, often heated on a stove. Soapy water was then used to agitate the clothes, either by hand, with a washboard, or with a plunger-style agitator. After scrubbing, the soapy water was drained, and the clothes were rinsed with clean water, often in a second washtub. Finally, the laundry was wrung out by hand to remove excess water before being hung to dry.

Variations of the washtub exist, including double tubs which allowed for simultaneous washing and rinsing. In some instances, washtubs were integrated into plumbing systems with drainage pipes. While largely replaced by automated appliances, washtubs are still used in some parts of the world and by those seeking a more traditional or eco-friendly approach to laundry. They can also be repurposed for gardening, storage, or as decorative elements.
