Pilgrims traveled on foot or by animal and sometimes undertook long routes across regions or countries, often as organized processions or shared journeys. Key destinations in German-speaking lands include shrines in Kevelaer and Altötting, as well as cathedrals in Aachen, Trier, and Cologne.

In modern practice, wallfahrten continue as religious and cultural events. They may be parish-organized, run by religious associations, or undertaken independently. Journeys vary from short day trips to long-distance routes, including traditional treks to Marian shrines or major Christian centers such as Santiago de Compostela, Lourdes, Jerusalem, or Rome. The term wallfahrt is often used for large organized events; the verb form pilgern is used for the act of making a pilgrimage more broadly.

Today, wallfahrten retain their religious dimension while also reflecting heritage, tourism, and regional identity. They can foster community, spiritual reflection, and charitable aims, and sometimes combine with ecological or social projects. In some contexts, ecumenical or interfaith elements have emerged, emphasizing shared values of pilgrimage and peace.
