A võtmesõlme, also known as a cipher or encryption key, is a sequence of characters used in cryptography to secure information by transforming it into an unreadable format. The process of encoding data with a key is called encryption, while the reverse process of decoding it is called decryption. Võtmesõlmed play a crucial role in ensuring data confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity in digital communications and storage.

Võtmesõlmed can be symmetric or asymmetric. In symmetric cryptography, the same key is used for both encryption and decryption, making key distribution a critical challenge.
