Võltsõlmed are a type of knot that are intentionally tied incorrectly to mimic the appearance of a secure knot. They are often used in situations where a knot is needed for visual purposes but does not require actual structural integrity, such as in theatrical productions, costuming, or decorative applications. The term "võltsõlmed" is Estonian, translating roughly to "false knots" or "fake knots."

The primary characteristic of a võltsõlm is that while it may look like a functional knot from a distance, closer inspection reveals that the rope or cord is not properly intertwined or secured. Instead, loops and ends are often simply tucked or arranged to give the impression of a tightened knot. This can be achieved by arranging the rope in a way that resembles a common knot like a square knot or a bowline, but without the locking mechanism that gives a true knot its strength.

The use of võltsõlmed is typically limited to non-load-bearing contexts. They are not suitable for climbing, securing heavy objects, or any application where safety depends on the knot's ability to hold under tension. Their purpose is purely aesthetic, providing a quick and easy way to create the visual effect of a tied knot without the time or skill required to tie a proper one. In some craft or art projects, they can serve as a decorative element.
