These sciences often employ empirical methods, relying on observation and experimentation.

The social sciences investigate human society and social relationships. Key areas within this domain include sociology, which examines social structures and interactions; psychology, the study of the mind and behavior; economics, which analyzes the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services; anthropology, the study of human societies and cultures; and political science, the study of government and politics. These disciplines often combine empirical research with theoretical analysis.

The formal sciences, sometimes called abstract sciences, deal with abstract structures and formal systems. Mathematics and logic are prime examples, providing the foundational tools and reasoning frameworks used across many other scientific fields. Computer science, while having practical applications, is also considered a formal science due to its study of computation and information. These fields are characterized by deductive reasoning rather than empirical observation.
