Väsymisilmiöitä, or fatigue phenomena, refers to a broad range of effects that occur in materials subjected to cyclic loading. These phenomena are a major concern in engineering design, particularly for components that experience repeated stresses, such as bridges, aircraft, and rotating machinery. The core issue is that a material that can withstand a static load far greater than its fatigue limit may fail under a much smaller dynamic load if that load is applied repeatedly over time.

The most well-known of these phenomena is fatigue failure, also known as metal fatigue. This occurs when a crack initiates at a stress concentration point, such as a surface defect or a sharp corner, and propagates under repeated stress cycles. Eventually, the crack grows to a critical size, leading to sudden and catastrophic fracture. The number of cycles a material can withstand before failure is dependent on the applied stress level, material properties, and environmental conditions.

Another related phenomenon is creep, which occurs at elevated temperatures. Under sustained stress, materials can deform plastically over time, even if the stress is below the yield strength. This deformation can lead to dimensional changes and eventual failure. Creep is particularly important in high-temperature applications like jet engines and power plants.

Environmental factors can also exacerbate fatigue phenomena. Corrosion fatigue, for instance, occurs when a corrosive environment accelerates crack growth. Stress corrosion cracking is another related mechanism where a susceptible material is subjected to tensile stress in a specific corrosive environment, leading to crack propagation. Understanding and mitigating these fatigue phenomena is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of structures and components throughout their service life.
