A värvihaldussüsteem, often referred to as CMS (Color Management System), is a set of tools and processes designed to ensure consistent color reproduction across various devices and media. Its primary goal is to achieve predictable and accurate color representation, from initial capture to final output.

The fundamental principle behind color management is the use of color profiles. These profiles are data files that describe the color characteristics of a specific device, such as a monitor, scanner, camera, or printer. They map the device's capabilities to a standard color space.

A typical CMS workflow involves creating or obtaining color profiles for all devices in the production chain. When an image is created or edited, it is usually done within a standard working color space, like sRGB or Adobe RGB. Before outputting to a different device, the CMS uses the color profiles to transform the image's colors from the working space to the target device's space, compensating for differences in color gamuts and behaviors.

This process is crucial in fields like graphic design, photography, printing, and digital imaging where precise color accuracy is paramount. Without a CMS, colors can appear drastically different on screen compared to a printout, or between different monitors, leading to inconsistencies and dissatisfaction. By managing color throughout the workflow, a CMS minimizes these discrepancies, ensuring that what is seen is what is intended.
