Vänsterkammarsassistentenheten, often abbreviated as LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device), is a mechanical pump that helps a weakened left ventricle of the heart to pump blood. The left ventricle is the main pumping chamber of the heart responsible for distributing oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. In cases of severe heart failure where the left ventricle can no longer perform this function adequately, an LVAD can be implanted.

The device typically consists of a pump that is surgically placed within the body and a controller that monitors the pump's function. A power source, usually a battery pack worn externally, provides energy to the pump. The LVAD works by taking blood from the left ventricle and pumping it into the aorta, the main artery that carries blood away from the heart. This artificial pumping action supplements or replaces the failing function of the natural ventricle.

LVADs can be used as a "bridge to transplant," meaning they are implanted in patients awaiting a heart transplant to keep them alive and stable until a donor heart becomes available. They can also be used as a "destination therapy," providing long-term support for individuals who are not candidates for a heart transplant. The implantation of an LVAD is a major surgical procedure, and patients require ongoing medical management and monitoring.
