A Left Ventricular Assist Device, commonly known as an LVAD, is a mechanical pump that helps a weakened left ventricle in the heart to pump blood. The left ventricle is the main pumping chamber of the heart, responsible for sending oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. When it is unable to perform this function adequately due to conditions like heart failure, an LVAD can be surgically implanted.
