Vänsterkammarsassistentenheten, often referred to as a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), is a mechanical pump that helps a weakened left ventricle pump blood throughout the body. The left ventricle is the heart's main pumping chamber, responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. When it is unable to perform this function effectively due to conditions like heart failure, an LVAD can be implanted.

The device typically consists of a pump, a driveline that exits the body and connects to an external power source, and a controller. The pump is surgically implanted within the chest, usually attached to the apex of the left ventricle and the aorta. Blood is pumped from the left ventricle into the aorta, bypassing the weakened heart muscle.

LVADs are primarily used in two scenarios: as a bridge to transplant for patients awaiting a heart transplant, and as destination therapy for patients who are not candidates for transplant but have advanced heart failure. While an LVAD can significantly improve a patient's quality of life and prolong survival, it is a complex medical device with associated risks and requires lifelong management. Patients with LVADs need regular monitoring and care to ensure the device functions correctly and to manage potential complications.
