Välittäjähiukkaset, known in English as force carrier particles or gauge bosons, are fundamental particles in quantum field theory that mediate the fundamental forces of nature. These particles are responsible for the interactions between other particles, such as quarks and leptons. Each of the four fundamental forces is associated with a specific type of välittäjähiukkanen.

The electromagnetic force, for instance, is mediated by photons. Photons are massless and electrically neutral, and their exchange results in phenomena like the attraction or repulsion between charged particles and the propagation of light. The strong nuclear force, which binds quarks together to form protons and neutrons, and also holds the nucleus of an atom together, is mediated by gluons. Gluons are also massless, but they carry a "color charge" and are themselves subject to the strong force, making their behavior more complex than that of photons.

The weak nuclear force, responsible for certain types of radioactive decay, is mediated by the W and Z bosons. These particles are massive, which is why the weak force has a very short range. Finally, the gravitational force, the weakest of the fundamental forces but dominant on large scales, is hypothesized to be mediated by gravitons. However, the graviton is still a theoretical particle and has not been experimentally detected. The study of välittäjähiukkaset is crucial for understanding the fundamental building blocks of the universe and how they interact.
