The composition of a population can also change. This includes shifts in age structure, gender distribution, ethnic makeup, and socioeconomic characteristics. For example, an aging population, characterized by a growing proportion of older individuals, can result from declining birth rates and increased life expectancy. Similarly, changes in fertility patterns can alter the proportion of young people.
