Városfal, commonly translated as city wall, is a defensive wall that surrounds and protects a town or city. In medieval Hungary, városfalak were usually built of stone or brick, sometimes reinforced with earthworks. The wall ringed the settlement and was punctuated by towers and gatehouses. Along the ramparts were battlements and embrasures for archers and, later, for artillery. A fortified gate controlled entry to the town, and many sites included moats and drawbridges as additional layers of defense.
