Vámügyintézés, commonly referred to as vámügyintézkedés in Hungarian, denotes the administrative processes by which goods crossing borders are brought under customs control. It encompasses the declaration, assessment and clearance of goods, as well as related checks and procedures. In Hungary these activities are carried out by the national customs authority, within the framework of European Union rules.

The legal framework combines EU-wide regulations, notably the Union Customs Code, with national laws and administrative rules implemented by the Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal (NAV). The process covers both import and export shipments, including the determination of tariff classification, customs value, and origin, as well as the collection of duties, value-added tax and any excise duties or reliefs that may apply. For certain movements, simplified or accelerated procedures and authorizations, such as Authorized Economic Operator status, may be available to facilitate clearance.

Typical procedure: an importer, exporter or their authorized agent submits a customs declaration to NAV, accompanied by required documents such as a commercial invoice, packing list and transport documents, and sometimes licenses or certificates. NAV assesses tariff codes, value and origin, calculates duties and taxes, and determines whether the goods can be released. Compliance checks may lead to additional information requests, inspections, or hold upon non-compliance.

Vámügyintézés is essential for legitimate cross-border trade, ensuring revenue collection, security and regulatory compliance, while enabling efficient movement of goods when requirements are met. Non-compliance can result in penalties, delays or seizure of goods.
