Vuotoreitti is a term used in Finnish civil engineering and hydrology to denote a designated path for excess water to bypass a normal flow route within a drainage system, watercourse, or dam. The purpose is to prevent overloading of key infrastructure and to reduce flood risk by providing a controlled outlet for stormwater, groundwater, or process effluent. A vuotoreitti can take the form of an overflow pipe or tunnel, a dedicated relief channel, a spillway, or a bypass culvert that connects a catchment area to a lower-elevation water body or detention basin. In sewer networks, vuotoreittejä are designed to handle peak inflows when the main sewer is full, and they are typically equipped with gates, check valves, or siphons to prevent backflow and to regulate discharge.

Design considerations include capacity relative to catchment size, reliability under cold weather and debris conditions, maintenance access, environmental impact, and the hydraulic interaction with connected water bodies. Operationally, vuotoreittejä may be monitored with sensors and managed automatically or manually during precipitation events. They are an element of broader flood risk management, urban drainage planning, and dam safety strategies. The term derives from Finnish words vuoto (leak or overflow) and reitti (route).
