Vuotoeristyksellä, also known as vacuum insulation, is a method of thermal insulation that utilizes a vacuum to significantly reduce heat transfer. Heat can be transferred through conduction, convection, and radiation. In a vacuum, the absence of matter eliminates heat transfer by conduction and convection. Radiation can still occur, but it is often mitigated through specialized materials.

The principle behind vacuum insulation is similar to that of a thermos flask, which uses a vacuum between two walls to keep liquids hot or cold for extended periods. In practical applications, vacuum insulated panels (VIPs) are commonly employed. These panels typically consist of a porous core material, such as silica or fiberglass, which is enclosed in a gas-impermeable outer envelope. The air is then pumped out from between the core and the envelope, creating a high vacuum.

The effectiveness of vacuum insulation is measured by its R-value, which indicates its resistance to heat flow. VIPs generally have much higher R-values per inch of thickness compared to conventional insulation materials like fiberglass or foam. This makes them particularly useful in situations where space is limited, such as in building construction or in the design of refrigerators and freezers.

However, vacuum insulation also presents challenges. The outer envelope must be extremely robust to maintain the vacuum, and any puncture or damage can lead to a loss of insulating performance. Furthermore, the manufacturing process for VIPs can be more complex and costly than for traditional insulation. Despite these drawbacks, the superior thermal performance of vacuum insulation makes it an attractive option for energy-efficient designs.
