votarii

Votarii is a genus of small, terrestrial reptiles in the family Scincidae (skinks). The genus was first described in 1987 by herpetologist J. C. Alvarez in the Journal of African Herpetology. It contains two valid species, Votarii robustus and Votarii angustirostris, both endemic to the eastern highlands of Malawi.

Members of Votarii are characterized by a cylindrical body with smooth, glossy dorsal scales and a tail that can be autotomised when threatened. Their coloration is typically a muted brown or gray with subtle dorsal striping, which assists in camouflage among leaf litter and rocky substrates. Votarii robustus displays a slightly larger body size and broader snout compared with Votarii angustirostris. The snout‑vent length of adult males ranges from 8.5 to 10.2 cm, while females are generally smaller.

The species occupy montane forest gaps, stream banks, and scree slopes at elevations between 1,500 and 2,700 meters. They are insectivorous, feeding primarily on ants, beetles, and other small arthropods. No large predators of Votarii are specifically documented, though local avian predators likely play a role in controlling skink populations.

Conservation assessments in 2015 listed Votarii robustus as Least Concern, citing its relatively stable population and wide distribution within protected areas. Votarii angustirostris has been classified as Near Threatened, with habitat loss from agricultural expansion and logging cited as primary threats. Conservation efforts focus on habitat preservation and ongoing monitoring of population trends.
