Volvocine refers to the volvocine algae, a clade of green algae within the order Volvocales that spans a range from unicellular forms to complex multicellular colonies. The group includes genera such as Gonium, Pandorina, Eudorina, Pleodorina, and Volvox. The volvocine lineage is widely cited as a classic example of the evolutionary transition from single cells to multicellularity and cellular differentiation.

Morphology and development in volvocine species show an incremental increase in organizational complexity. Colonies are typically spherical or ovoid and arise by clonal division with cells embedded in a gelatinous extracellular matrix.
