Public health, or volksgezondheid in Dutch, is the organized effort to protect and improve the health of populations. It seeks to prevent disease and injury, extend life, and promote well-being through policies, services, and scientific research that target communities rather than individual patients.

Core functions include assessment, policy development, and assurance. Through surveillance, outbreak response, vaccination programs, health education, environmental health, occupational safety, maternal and child health, and emergency preparedness, public health agencies monitor health trends and intervene to reduce risks. They work to identify emerging health issues and prepare coordinated responses.

Determinants and equity: health outcomes are shaped by a range of social, economic, environmental, and behavioral factors. Public health aims to reduce disparities by addressing upstream determinants and by ensuring access to preventive services, healthy environments, and healthy behaviors across all population groups. This often requires collaboration across sectors beyond health care, such as housing, education, and transportation.

Governance and measurement: public health is usually led by a government health authority and complemented by local services. It relies on data from vital statistics, surveys, disease registries, and monitoring systems. Success is evaluated through indicators such as life expectancy, infant mortality, vaccination coverage, and rates of preventable disease.

Public health complements clinical care; together they form a health system. The field has evolved from sanitation and vaccination to include chronic disease prevention, health promotion, and health equity, reflecting the need to address complex determinants of health at the population level.
