A vector network analyzer (VNA) is a measurement instrument used to characterize the electrical behavior of networks by measuring their complex S-parameters over a defined frequency range. It is widely used in RF and microwave engineering to determine how a device or component reflects and transmits energy when driven by a signal at one or more ports.

Operation and calibration: A VNA employs calibrated signal sources and receivers connected to the device under test through a test setup and a defined calibration plane. It performs a frequency sweep and measures complex reflection (S11, S22) and transmission (S21, S12) parameters for a two-port network or higher-port equivalents. Calibration with reference standards (such as SOLT or TRL kits) removes systematic errors and places reference planes at known locations, improving measurement accuracy.

Data interpretation: The instrument reports the magnitude and phase of S-parameters, enabling calculations of return loss, insertion loss, VSWR, impedance, and other performance metrics. Results are presented in polar form, on Smith charts, or converted to time-domain representations after suitable processing. VNAs commonly export data in standard formats such as Touchstone files (e.g., .s2p).

Applications and formats: VNAs are used to characterize antennas, filters, cables, connectors, amplifiers, mixers, and other RF/microwave devices. They support two-port benchtop configurations and, in many models, multi-port arrangements for complex systems. Frequency ranges typically span from a few kilohertz to tens of gigahertz, depending on the model. Modern VNAs offer advanced calibration methods, multi-port testing, and options for time-domain analysis and parameter extraction.
