Visates are a class of chemical compounds characterized by the presence of a nitrate ester functional group. This functional group consists of a nitrogen atom bonded to three oxygen atoms, with one of the oxygen atoms also bonded to an organic radical. The general formula for a visate is R-O-NO2, where R represents an organic group.

Visates are often produced by the nitration of alcohols, a process where an alcohol reacts with a nitrating agent, typically nitric acid. The reaction conditions, such as temperature and concentration of the nitrating agent, are crucial for controlling the extent of nitration and the purity of the resulting visate.

Many visates are known for their explosive properties. This is due to the inherent instability of the nitrate ester group, which can readily decompose, releasing a large amount of energy and gaseous products.
