Virtaussäkeitien, often translated as "flow-lines" or "stream-lines," is a concept primarily used in fluid dynamics to visualize and analyze the motion of fluids. They represent the instantaneous path of a fluid particle. Imagine releasing a tiny, buoyant particle into a flowing liquid and letting it drift with the current. The path that particle traces is a virtaussäe.

The direction of a virtaussäe at any given point in the fluid is tangential to the velocity vector of the fluid at that point. This means if you draw a line along the virtaussäe, it will always point in the same direction as the fluid is moving at that specific location. In steady flow, virtaussäkeitien, streaklines, and pathlines are all identical.
